Kindergarten Readiness
Our ECLC program strives to give children a balanced program that is specifically tailored to the individual child. Every learning experience is designed to meet one or more of the child’s four areas of development; social and emotional, cognitive, physical and cultural. The lessons taught and reinforced at the JCC’s ECLC are carefully designed to give your child the tools needed to succeed in school. Your child will make life-long friendships, develop attitudes and values that will allow them to approach learning with delight and enthusiasm, and develop a healthy, positive self-concept.
On a daily basis, children approach learning as an adventure. When your Pre-K child learns the letter “M,” he will travel to the land of “Mr. Munching Mouth,” and do such adventurous things as: stringing macaroni necklaces (to strengthen fine motor skills), experience magnets in the science center, and go on a classroom search for items that begin with the letter “M.” The children might also have a math lesson about size and measurement and cruise around the room with a 12-inch length of rope measuring furniture.
For handwriting, the JCC uses the Handwriting Without Tears method. This method appeals to all styles of learning: visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic. During the first few weeks of school the children work with wood pieces as they identify big curve, little curves, big lines, and little lines. It is amazing to see children working together in a group, learning to follow steps in a process, as they make letters in a structured way.
